On Excessive Packaging
I assume that you are familiar with the phenomenon of “excessive packaging.” We can find examples with ease: a small computer is packed in a thick and heavy carton, clothes are placed in well-designed and superfluous plastic bags, and mooncakes are typical placed in delicate and extravagant boxes.
What are the causes of this phenomenon? On one hand, many manufactures wrap their products in unnecessary but appealing materials aimed at attracting customers’ attention, arousing their curiosity and then stimulating their purchasing desire. This is an obvious method to increase profits. On the other hand, quite a few customers believe that the more delicate or elaborate the package seems the more superior the product’s quality will be. This trend feeds into the same line of reasoning as the first example.
To change this situation, I think we as a society should take the following measures. First, laws must be made and implemented to restrict excessive packaging. Moreover, a public education campaign should be launched to teach consumers that elaborate packaging is not indicative of quality. Only in these ways can we put an end to this wasteful trend.
